Services Sector

REALM 21 · 9 Ontological Pillars · 36 Micro-Realms

The Dominant Tertiary Engine of Modern India (>54% GVA)

Generating over 54% of Gross Value Added (GVA), commanding more than 4.5% of global commercial services exports, and shielding India's Balance of Payments with a massive invisible surplus, the **Services Sector** is the undisputed growth locomotive of post-1991 India. Realm 21 maps this tertiary powerhouse across its nine syllabus pillars: the structural nature of **Services**, **IT**, **Financial Services**, **Tourism**, **Healthcare**, **Education**, **Logistics**, **Business Services (GCCs)**, and its asymmetric **Contribution to GDP and Employment**.

I. SERVICES → II. IT & ITeS → III. FINANCIAL SERVICES → IV. TOURISM → V. HEALTHCARE → VI. EDUCATION → VII. LOGISTICS → VIII. BUSINESS SERVICES → IX. GDP & JOBS

Core Services-Sector Distinctions

Traditional IT/BPO Outsourcing vs. Global Capability Centres (GCCs)

Traditional Outsourcing (3rd-Party IT/BPO) involves foreign firms contracting work out to Indian IT vendors (like TCS, Infosys, Wipro) for cost arbitrage. Global Capability Centres (GCCs) are captive offshore insourcing units wholly owned by global MNCs (like Goldman Sachs, Walmart, Texas Instruments, Mercedes-Benz in India) that build core IP, semiconductor designs, quantitative models, and enterprise architecture in-house.

WTO GATS Modes of Service Delivery: Mode 1 vs. Mode 4

India's core offensive interests at the WTO lie in Mode 1 (Cross-Border Supply)—where the service crosses the border digitally (IT, BPO, telemedicine, KPO) without people moving—and Mode 4 (Movement of Natural Persons)—where Indian professionals (engineers, doctors, nurses, IT consultants) travel temporarily abroad to deliver services on-site.

Why Services displays a "Bimodal" Productivity Distribution

India's services sector is split into two extremes: (1) Modern Tradable Services (IT, GCCs, Banking, Telecom) which exhibit world-class productivity per worker but employ less than 5% of the total workforce, and (2) Traditional Non-Tradable Services (unorganised retail kiranas, street vendors, personal services, informal transport) which employ the bulk of service workers at low wages.
