Core Ontological Distinctions

Land Cover vs. Land Use

Land Cover is the physical/biological material on the surface (grass, trees, asphalt, water) observed by satellites. Land Use is the human socio-economic function (recreation park, timber reserve, grazing common) recorded in revenue papers.

Net Sown Area (NSA) vs. Gross Cropped Area (GCA)

NSA is the physical area sown with crops, counted only once per agricultural year. GCA counts the area as many times as it is sown in a year ($\text{Cropping Intensity} = \frac{\text{GCA}}{\text{NSA}} \times 100$).

Current Fallow vs. Fallow Other Than Current vs. Culturable Waste

Current Fallow is uncultivated for $\le 1$ agricultural year. Other Fallow is uncultivated for $1\text{ to }5$ years. If left uncultivated for $> 5$ years, it degrades into Culturable Waste Land.
