The Architecture of Connection
How do other people, groups, relationships, culture, and social situations shape what we think, feel, and do? The social mind moves outward from the individual, interpreting social information, forming attitudes, navigating group pressure, and participating in the collective reality.
The Interpersonal Matrix
Taxonomy of Influence and Interaction
Social Foundations
- NODE 01: How the actual, imagined, or implied presence of others influences us.
- NODE 02: Person × Situation Interaction. Individual differences meet situational pressure.
Social Perception
- NODE 04 & 05: Using Schemas, expectations, and roles to form impressions.
- NODE 06 & 07: First Impressions (Thin-slice rapid judgments) and Trait integration (Primacy effects).
Attribution
- NODE 08 & 09: Explaining behaviour via Internal (Person) vs External (Situation) factors.
- NODE 12: Fundamental Attribution Error (Overweighting personal causes for others).
- NODE 14: Self-Serving Bias (Success = Internal, Failure = External).
Attitudes & Dissonance
- NODE 15: Attitude = Cognition + Affect + Behavioural Tendency.
- NODE 18: Cognitive Dissonance (Inconsistency between belief and behavior causes discomfort, driving rationalization).
- NODE 19: Self-Perception Theory (Inferring our attitudes by watching our own behavior).
Persuasion
- NODE 20 & 22: Source (Credibility/Attractiveness) → Message → Audience.
- NODE 21: Elaboration Likelihood Model (Central route via logic vs Peripheral route via surface cues).
Influence & Conformity
- NODE 24 & 25: Conformity (Asch). Yielding to majority group pressure.
- NODE 26 & 27: Informational (Looking to others when uncertain) vs Normative (Conforming to belong).
- NODE 28 & 29: Obedience (Milgram). Situational pressure from authority.
Group Dynamics
- NODE 35 - 37: Structure (Roles, Status, Formal/Informal Norms).
- NODE 39: Group Polarization (Discussion pushes initial tendencies to extremes).
- NODE 40: Groupthink (Pressure for consensus suppresses dissent).
Group Performance
- NODE 41: Social Facilitation (Presence of others boosts dominant responses).
- NODE 42: Social Loafing (Reduced individual effort in a group task).
- NODE 43 & 44: Deindividuation (Anonymity) & Diffusion of Responsibility.
Helping & Altruism
- NODE 45: The Bystander Effect (More people = Less likely to help due to diffused responsibility).
- NODE 46 & 47: Prosocial behavior, Cooperation, and Cognitive/Emotional Empathy.
Intergroup Relations
- NODE 51: Social Identity Theory (Tajfel). Categorization → Identification → Comparison.
- NODE 52: "US" (In-group favoritism) vs "THEM" (Out-group homogeneity).
- NODE 49: Competition over scarce resources and status.
Prejudice
- NODE 54: Stereotype (Generalized Belief / Shortcut).
- NODE 55: Prejudice (Evaluative Attitude / Feeling).
- NODE 56: Discrimination (Unequal Behaviour).
- NODE 57: Stereotype Threat (Performance anxiety from group stereotypes).
Culture
- NODE 59 & 60: Individualism vs Collectivism, Tight vs Loose norms.
- NODE 62: Self-Presentation and Impression Management.
- Cultural frameworks shape behavioral scripts and expectations.
Relationships
- NODE 63 & 64: Interpersonal Attraction (Proximity, Familiarity, Similarity).
- NODE 66: Triangular Theory of Love (Intimacy, Passion, Commitment).
- NODE 68: Social Exchange (Evaluating Costs vs Rewards).
Power & Leadership
- NODE 76: Leadership emergence (Traits, Behaviors, Situations).
- NODE 77 & 78: Power (Resource control, Expertise) and Authority (Institutional legitimacy).
- NODE 79: Minority Influence (Requires consistency and commitment).
Aggression vs Prosocial
- NODE 70 & 72: Aggression (Reactive vs Instrumental). Frustration-Aggression hypothesis.
- NODE 74 & 75: Trust, Reciprocity, and Social Capital (Networks of cooperation).
Collective Behaviour
- NODE 82 & 83: Crowds, Shared identity, and Social Contagion (Spread of emotion/behavior).
- NODE 84: Rumours (Transmission and distortion under uncertainty).
Modern Social World
- NODE 85 - 87: Social Media, Online Disinhibition, and Echo Chambers (Homogeneous networks reinforcing polarization).
- NODE 89 & 94: Advertising, Public Policy, and Norm-based interventions.
Core Distinctions
Stereotype: A cognitive belief or mental shortcut about a group. Prejudice: An emotional evaluation (affect) toward a group. Discrimination: The actual unequal behavior or action taken.
Conformity vs. ObedienceConformity: Changing behavior to match the majority (peer pressure, no direct command). Obedience: Changing behavior in response to a direct command from a perceived authority figure.
Actor-Observer DifferenceWhen I trip, it's because the floor is uneven (Situational/Actor). When you trip, it's because you are clumsy (Dispositional/Observer). We attribute our own actions to context, but others' actions to character.
The Social Loop
NODE 95: The structural flow of interpersonal reality.
