The Architecture of Demand
What happens when demands are perceived as exceeding our resources? The stress system is the organism's fundamental mechanism for evaluating threat, mobilizing physiological energy, coping with adversity, and driving ultimate adaptation or strain.
The Allostatic Matrix
Taxonomy of Strain and Recovery
Stress Foundations
- NODE 01: Stressor = The Demand. Stress = The Response/Process.
- NODE 03: Acute (Short-term) vs Chronic (Repeated/Prolonged).
Appraisal
- NODE 05: Primary Appraisal: "What does this mean for me?" (Threat vs Challenge).
- NODE 06: Secondary Appraisal: "What can I do about it?" (Resources & Control).
Physiological Response
- NODE 10: Autonomic Nervous System (Sympathetic mobilizes, Parasympathetic restores).
- NODE 11 & 12: HPA Axis & Cortisol (Energy mobilization, not inherently "bad").
Adaptation
- NODE 13: Allostasis (Stability through dynamic physiological change).
- NODE 14: Allostatic Load (The cumulative burden of repeated demands).
Classic Models
- NODE 08 & 09: Fight, Flight, or Freeze.
- NODE 15: General Adaptation Syndrome (Alarm → Resistance → Exhaustion).
- NODE 07: Lazarus' Transactional Model.
Coping Mechanisms
- NODE 24: Problem-focused (Change the situation).
- NODE 25 & 28: Emotion-focused & Reappraisal (Change your response).
- NODE 27: Coping Flexibility (Matching strategy to situation).
Social Resources
- NODE 30 & 31: Social Support (Emotional, Instrumental, Informational) buffers stress appraisal.
- NODE 32: Loneliness is a severe chronic stressor.
Resilience & Recovery
- NODE 33 & 34: Resilience as a process of positive adaptation, not just "mental toughness."
- NODE 74: Recovery (return to baseline) vs Resilience (adapting effectively amid adversity).
Daily & Chronic Stress
- NODE 45: Daily Hassles (Accumulation of minor demands).
- NODE 47: Chronic Stress (Lack of recovery drives physiological burden).
Stress & Cognition
- NODE 38: Narrows attention (Threat vigilance).
- NODE 40: Impairs working memory and cognitive flexibility.
Stress & Emotion
- NODE 41: Drives fear, anger, anxiety, and frustration.
- NODE 64: Demands heavy emotional regulation.
Stress & Health
- NODE 54: Bidirectional disruption of Sleep.
- NODE 55: Impacts cardiovascular, immune, and metabolic functioning.
Individual Differences
- NODE 71: Genetics, personality (Neuroticism), and prior experience shape appraisal.
- NODE 72: Stress Sensitization (Prior adversity increasing later sensitivity).
Culture & Development
- NODE 42: Early adversity and sensitive developmental periods.
- NODE 68 & 69: Culture dictates meaning, roles, and available coping practices.
Applied Stress Science
- NODE 48 & 49: Work stress and Burnout (Emotional exhaustion, cynicism).
- NODE 53: Tech stress (Information overload, constant connectivity).
Core Distinctions
The Stressor is the external demand (an exam, a barking dog). Stress is your internal physiological and psychological response to it.
Recovery vs. ResilienceRecovery is returning to your baseline after the stressor passes. Resilience is the dynamic process of adapting effectively while the adversity is happening.
Problem-Focused vs. Emotion-Focused CopingProblem-focused changes the situation (studying harder for the test). Emotion-focused changes how you feel about it (doing breathing exercises to calm down). Neither is universally "better"; flexibility is key.
