The Architecture of the Person

Who am I? How do I understand myself, and why do people differ from one another? This realm explores how self-awareness forms identity, and how biology and experience forge the relatively enduring patterns of thought, emotion, and behaviour we call personality.

Core Distinctions

Self vs. Personality vs. Identity

Self: The core subject ("Who am I?"). Personality: The stable, observable patterns of behaviour and emotion ("What characterizes me?"). Identity: The narrative categories you place yourself into ("I am a scientist, a parent, a stoic").

Trait vs. State

A Trait is a chronic, long-term baseline (e.g., Trait Anxiety means you are generally an anxious person). A State is a temporary condition (e.g., State Anxiety right before a public speech, even if you are normally calm).

Person-Situation Interaction

Personality does not mean you act the exact same way everywhere. A highly extraverted person will still be quiet at a funeral. Behaviour = Person × Situation.

The Personal Loop

NODE 94/95: The structural flow of identity.
