The Mechanics of Change
How does experience produce enduring changes in behaviour, knowledge, and skills? While memory dictates how information is retained, learning governs how organisms adapt. This realm maps the associative pathways, behavioural consequences, and observational loops that construct our adaptive repertoire.
The Adaptation Matrix
Taxonomy of Acquired Behaviour
Foundations of Learning
- NODE 01: Relatively enduring change in behaviour/knowledge due to experience.
- Distinction: Learning ≠ Temporary Performance ≠ Maturation.
- NODE 02: Memory retrieves what Learning has modified.
Associative Learning
- NODE 04: Two events become linked (Event A + Event B).
- Foundation for both Classical and Operant conditioning.
- NODE 12: Contingency & Prediction (Not just pairing, but predictiveness).
Classical Conditioning
- NODE 05: Pavlov. NS + UCS → UCR. Then CS → CR.
- NODE 07 & 08: Extinction (new learning, not erasure) & Spontaneous Recovery.
- NODE 09 & 10: Generalization vs Discrimination.
Operant Conditioning
- NODE 14: Skinner. Behaviour → Consequence → Future Probability.
- NODE 21 & 22: Shaping (successive approximations) & Chaining.
- NODE 29: Operant Extinction & Extinction bursts.
Reinforcement Matrix
- NODE 15: Reinforcement INCREASES behaviour (Positive=Add, Negative=Remove).
- NODE 16: Punishment DECREASES behaviour.
- Crucial NODE 19: Negative Reinforcement is NOT Punishment.
Schedules
- NODE 23: Continuous vs Partial/Intermittent reinforcement.
- NODE 24 & 25: Ratio (Number of responses). Fixed vs Variable.
- NODE 26 & 27: Interval (Passage of time). Fixed vs Variable.
Cognitive Learning
- NODE 30 & 31: Tolman. Latent Learning & Cognitive Maps. Learning without immediate performance.
- NODE 32: Insight learning (Sudden restructuring / "Aha").
Social Learning
- NODE 33: Bandura. Modeling & Imitation.
- NODE 34: Attention → Retention → Reproduction → Motivation.
- NODE 35: Vicarious reinforcement (Observing another's consequences).
Biological Constraints
- NODE 39: Preparedness & Evolutionary constraints.
- NODE 40: Garcia effect (Taste aversion learned after long delays). Not all stimuli condition equally.
Escape & Avoidance
- NODE 42 & 43: Escape (aversive event occurring) vs Avoidance (preventing expected aversive event). Negative reinforcement at work.
- NODE 44: Learned Helplessness (Seligman). Lack of perceived control.
Skill Acquisition
- NODE 49: Cognitive → Associative → Autonomous stages.
- NODE 50 & 51: Deliberate practice and targeted Feedback.
- NODE 52: Transfer of learning (Positive vs Negative).
Computational Learning
- NODE 46 & 47: Prediction Errors (PE) update Value expectations.
- State → Action → Reward → Update Value.
- Gateway to modern Reinforcement Learning algorithms.
Motivation
- NODE 57: Curiosity, exploration, and uncertainty reduction.
- NODE 58 & 59: Intrinsic vs Extrinsic. The Overjustification Effect (external rewards undermining intrinsic drive).
Application
- NODE 66: Educational learning (Practice, feedback, spacing).
- NODE 67 & 68: Behaviour modification (Token systems, shaping, workplace training).
- NODE 69: Ethics (Consent, dignity, autonomy).
Limits of Behaviourism
- NODE 70 & 73: Behaviourism is foundational, but insufficient for complex human learning.
- Learning can occur via internal representation, insight, and observation without direct, immediate reward.
Core Distinctions
Reinforcement ALWAYS increases behaviour. Punishment ALWAYS decreases behaviour. Negative reinforcement increases behaviour by removing something annoying (like putting on your seatbelt to stop the car beeping).
Classical vs. Operant ConditioningClassical links an involuntary response to a stimulus (salivating at a bell). Operant links a voluntary behaviour to a consequence (pressing a lever to get a pellet).
Learning ≠ Temporary PerformanceYou can know how to play the piano (Learning), but perform terribly today because you are tired (Performance). Learning is the enduring structural change.
The Adaptive Loop
NODE 75/76: The philosophical center of learning.
