The Manipulation of Representation
Once information is perceived, attended to, learned, and remembered, how does the mind represent and manipulate it? The human mind is enormously powerful yet fundamentally constrained by attention, memory limits, and cognitive biases. We reason, solve, and decide under a condition of bounded rationality.
The Cognition Matrix
Taxonomy of Rationality and Error
Foundations of Thought
- NODE 01: Thinking = Manipulating / Transforming Mental Representations.
- NODE 02: Symbols, Concepts, Images, Schemas, Mental Models.
- NODE 10: Inner speech and language as a cognitive tool.
Categorization
- NODE 04: Extracting common features to form an abstraction.
- NODE 05: Prototypes (The most typical, central example).
- NODE 06: Exemplars (Specific remembered instances).
Reasoning
- NODE 12: Deductive (General → Specific). Guaranteed validity if sound.
- NODE 13: Inductive (Specific → General). Probability and pattern discovery.
- NODE 15 & 16: Conditional reasoning and Critical Thinking.
Problem Solving
- NODE 17 & 18: Moving from Initial State to Goal State via Operators.
- NODE 19: Algorithms (Guaranteed, slow) vs NODE 20: Heuristics (Shortcuts, efficient).
- NODE 23 & 24: Obstacles: Functional Fixedness & Mental Set.
Creativity
- NODE 26: Divergent thinking (Multiple solutions) vs Convergent (Single best answer).
- NODE 22: Insight (Sudden restructuring / Productive Aha experience).
Decision Making
- NODE 29 & 30: Rational choice and Expected Value (Outcome × Probability).
- NODE 31: Risk (known probabilities) vs Uncertainty (unknowns).
- NODE 33 & 34: Prospect Theory & Loss Aversion (Losses weigh heavier than gains).
Heuristics
- NODE 36: Availability (Judging by how easily examples come to mind).
- NODE 37: Representativeness (Judging by similarity to a prototype).
- NODE 38: Anchoring (Insufficient adjustment from an initial value).
Cognitive Biases
- NODE 40: Confirmation Bias (Seeking confirming evidence only).
- NODE 41: Hindsight Bias ("I knew it all along").
- NODE 42: Overconfidence (Confidence ≠ Correctness).
- NODE 39: Base-rate neglect.
Metacognition
- NODE 47: Thinking about thinking. Monitoring, Evaluating, Adjusting.
- NODE 48: Judgments of learning and calibration.
- NODE 50 & 53: Cognitive control and Self-regulation.
Intelligence & IQ
- NODE 54 & 55: General cognitive ability and Spearman's 'g'.
- NODE 56: Fluid (Novel reasoning) vs Crystallized (Acquired knowledge).
- NODE 58 & 59: Standardized testing, Norms, and IQ interpretation.
Individual Differences
- NODE 61: Heredity, Environment, and Gene-environment interaction.
- Crucial: Heritability ≠ Genetically Determined.
- NODE 63: Expertise (Domain-specific knowledge & chunking).
Cognitive Limits
- NODE 49: Cognitive Load (Intrinsic vs Extraneous).
- NODE 78: Bounded Rationality (Simon). We 'Satisfice' rather than optimize perfectly.
- NODE 79: Ecological Rationality (Heuristics work well when matched to the environment).
Emotion & Motivation
- NODE 69: Affect heavily influences risk perception and reward calculation.
- NODE 52: Delayed gratification, impulse control, and discounting.
- NODE 70: Goal-directed cognition.
Technology & Cognition
- NODE 74 & 75: Cognitive Offloading (using external memory, calculators, search engines).
- NODE 76: Human-machine cognition, decision support, and Automation Bias.
Core Distinctions
A heuristic is a mental shortcut. While it can lead to cognitive biases, it is often an incredibly efficient, adaptive way to make decisions in a complex environment with limited time and information (Ecological Rationality).
Deductive vs. InductiveDeductive: Starts with a general rule and applies it to a specific case (If all A=B, and this is A, it must be B). Inductive: Takes specific observations and builds a generalized pattern (Probability).
Bounded RationalityHumans are not perfect calculators. Our reasoning is "bounded" by limited attention, limited working memory, limited time, and inherent uncertainty.
