The Assignment of Meaning

Why do we feel, what gives experiences emotional significance, and what drives us toward or away from them? Emotion grants meaning to our representations, while motivation directs our behaviour toward biological needs, psychological goals, and eventual rewards.

Core Distinctions

Emotion vs. Mood

An Emotion is a rapid, intense, coordinated response to a specific event (e.g., anger at being cut off in traffic). A Mood is a diffuse, longer-lasting state often lacking a clear, specific trigger (e.g., waking up feeling grumpy).

Wanting ≠ Liking (Pleasure)

Wanting (Incentive salience, driven by dopamine) makes you pursue a reward. Liking (Hedonic pleasure) is the enjoyment you feel when you get it. Addiction often involves intense wanting even when liking has faded.

Approach vs. Avoidance Goals

Studying to get an A is an Approach Goal. Studying so you don't fail and lose your scholarship is an Avoidance Goal. Both motivate, but avoidance often generates higher anxiety and fatigue.
