The Architecture of Change

How does the human psychological system emerge, change, and reorganize across time? Development is not simply growing from small to big; it is the continuous, dynamic interaction of biology, experience, relationships, culture, and historical context from conception to the end of life.

The Lifespan Matrix

Taxonomy of Growth and Adaptation

TAXONOMY A

Foundations

  • NODE 01: Study of psychological stability, growth, decline, and reorganization.
  • NODE 04 & 05: Nature vs Nurture (Gene-environment interaction) and Continuity vs Discontinuity.
TAXONOMY B

Developmental Domains

  • NODE 02: Physical, Cognitive, Language, Emotional, Social, Moral, and Personality.
  • Development occurs simultaneously and interactively across all domains.
TAXONOMY C

Prenatal Development

  • NODE 07: Germinal → Embryonic → Fetal periods.
  • NODE 08: Teratogens (Environmental hazards, drugs, stress) and the critical timing of exposure.
TAXONOMY D

Infancy

  • NODE 09 & 12: Neonatal adaptation and evolutionary survival reflexes (Rooting, Moro, Grasp).
  • NODE 11: Gross and fine motor development sequence.
  • NODE 18: Temperament (Biological emotional reactivity).
TAXONOMY E

Attachment

  • NODE 14: Bowlby (Evolutionary function of the Secure Base).
  • NODE 15: Ainsworth's Strange Situation (Secure vs Insecure classifications).
  • NODE 16: Driven by caregiver sensitivity and responsiveness.
TAXONOMY F

Cognitive Development

  • NODE 35 & 36: Play (Symbolic/Rule-based) and Emotion regulation.
TAXONOMY I

Identity & Adolescence

  • NODE 38 & 39: Erikson's Psychosocial Theory (e.g., Identity vs Role Confusion).
  • NODE 40 & 42: Adolescence, Puberty, and the developing brain (reward vs control).

❤️
  • NODE 52 & 53: Early Adulthood (Career, Independence, Intimacy).
  • NODE 54 & 60: Middle Adulthood (Generativity, legacy, changing roles).
  • NODE 56: Cognitive transitions (Crystallized vs Fluid ability).
TAXONOMY L

Aging

  • NODE 62: Normal cognitive aging (Preservation of semantic knowledge, slowing speed).
  • NODE 64: Socioemotional Selectivity Theory (Shifting social goals as time horizons shrink).
  • NODE 65: Successful aging, adaptation, and meaning.
TAXONOMY M

Ecology & Context

  • NODE 68 & 69: Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems (Microsystem to Macrosystem).
  • NODE 70 & 71: Culture, values, and historical cohort effects shaping pathways.
TAXONOMY N

Risk & Resilience

  • NODE 76 & 77: Biological/Environmental risk vs Protective factors (Supportive relationships).
  • NODE 67: Resilience (Adaptation after severe adversity).
TAXONOMY O

Developmental Science

  • NODE 79 & 80: Cross-sectional (different ages at one time) vs Longitudinal (same people over time) designs.
  • NODE 81: Cohort Effects (Generational differences distinct from pure age effects).

Core Distinctions

Heritability ≠ Genetically Determined

Heritability describes how much of the variation in a trait within a population is due to genes. It does not mean a trait is fixed or unchangeable by the environment (Epigenetics/Plasticity).

Cross-Sectional vs. Longitudinal

Testing 20-year-olds and 80-year-olds today (Cross-Sectional) shows age differences, but those differences might be due to Cohort Effects (e.g., growing up with the internet vs without). Only tracking the same people over 60 years (Longitudinal) shows true developmental change.

Continuity vs. Discontinuity

Is development a gradual, smooth slope like a growing tree (Continuity), or a series of sudden, distinct stair-steps like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly (Discontinuity / Stage Theories)?

The Developmental Loop

NODE 93/94: The structural flow of human growth.
