The Design Engine

Graphic Design • Typography • Layout • Branding • Visual Communication

The Central Question

How can visual elements be deliberately designed to communicate information, ideas, identity and experience? Art can exist for expression. Design introduces another fundamental constraint: Someone needs to understand, use, navigate, remember or respond to what you create.

PROBLEM → RESEARCH → IDEA → SKETCH → STRUCTURE → TYPOGRAPHY → LAYOUT → MESSAGE → AUDIENCE

The Communication Matrix

Ontology of Applied Visuals

Foundation & Process

09.01

What is Design?

EXPRESS
vs
  • Art: Prioritises expression.
  • Design: Must respond to a purpose, user, audience or problem.
  • Communication design, applied art, problem-solving.
09.02 - 09.04

Problem & Audience

👤
👤
👤
  • Every design begins with an objective.
  • Who is seeing this? What do they need to know?
  • Context changes how design behaves (location, culture, medium).
09.05 - 09.09

Ideation & Brief

  • Translating a request into a concrete Brief.
  • Thumbnail Sketches: Rapid, tiny alternatives for testing hierarchy.
  • Principle: Do not fall in love with the first idea.

Typography

09.11 - 09.13

Type & Anatomy

SERIF
SANS-SERIF
MONO
h
  • Visual design of written language.
  • Families: Serif, Sans Serif, Monospace, Display.
  • Anatomy: Baseline, x-height, cap height, ascender, descender.
09.18 - 09.20

Typographic Spacing

T A
S P A C E
  • Kerning: Space between individual letter pairs.
  • Tracking: Overall letter spacing across a block.
  • Leading: Vertical spacing between lines of text.
09.22 - 09.24

Hierarchy & Readability

  • Hierarchy: TITLE → SUBTITLE → BODY. Tells the reader where to begin.
  • Readability: How easily text blocks are navigated.
  • Legibility: How easily individual letters are distinguished.

Layout & Structure

09.27 - 09.31

The Grid System

  • Creates an underlying organisational framework.
  • Columns, rows, margins, gutters, modules.
  • Manuscript, Column, Modular, and Hierarchical grids.
09.34

White Space

BREATHE
  • Intentionally unoccupied visual space (doesn't have to be white).
  • Provides breathing room, clarity, focus, isolation.
  • Margins are not wasted space.
09.35 - 09.37

Visual Flow & Layout

  • Arranges text, images, and space within a format.
  • Guide the viewer: FIRST → SECOND → ACTION.
  • Use scale, contrast, and alignment to create paths.

Formats & Identity

09.38 - 09.42

Poster & Editorial

EXPO 2026
  • Poster: Distance readability, bold hierarchy (WHAT/WHEN/WHERE).
  • Editorial: Magazines, books. Focus on extended reading structure.
  • A cover must work as identity, invitation, and information.
09.43 - 09.45

Brand Identity

=
  • Logo: Mark, wordmark, lettermark, symbol.
  • Identity: Consistency across applications (logo + type + colour).
  • Building rules for a visual voice.
09.46 - 09.48

Iconography & Symbols

  • Designing systems of related, simplified symbols.
  • Must possess consistency, simplicity, and scalability.
  • Pictograms: Universally understandable signs (exit, transport).

Data, Digital & Ethics

09.49 - 09.51

Information Design

  • Transforming complex data into understandable visual structures.
  • Charts, timelines, maps, process diagrams.
  • Principle: Visualisation should help the viewer understand, not merely decorate.
09.52 - 09.54

Illustration & Metaphor

⏳
  • Visual interpretation of ideas serving a communication brief.
  • Metaphor: Representing abstract concepts with concrete images (e.g., Time → Sand/Clock).
09.57 - 09.59

Responsive & UI Design

  • Designing for screens: Pixels, flexible grids, breakpoints.
  • UI: Buttons, menus, cards, navigation, interaction states.
  • Must adapt from Desktop → Tablet → Phone.
09.61 - 09.62

Ethics & Accessibility

CANCEL SUBSCRIPTION
KEEP PAYING
  • Accessibility: Contrast, scalable text, non-colour cues.
  • Ethics: Avoiding dark patterns, manipulation, misinformation.
  • The designer affects what people notice and how they understand.
09.68 - 09.70

Production Basics

TRIM
vs
  • Vector: Mathematical paths (scalable, logos).
  • Raster: Pixels (photos, resolution dependent).
  • Print prep: Bleed, trim, margins, colour mode.
09.72 - 09.74

Foundation & Labs

CLASS 6
CLASS 8
CLASS 10
CLASS 12
  • C6-8: Posters, lettering, basic layout.
  • C11-12: Applied Art & Commercial Graphic Design.
  • Master Project: One message across 10 coherent formats (building a system).

Realm 09 Doctrine

ART ASKS: "WHAT DO I WANT TO EXPRESS?"

DESIGN ASKS: "WHAT DOES THE OTHER PERSON NEED?"

THE IDEA NEEDS A PURPOSE.
THE PURPOSE NEEDS AN AUDIENCE.
THE AUDIENCE NEEDS CLARITY.
CLARITY NEEDS HIERARCHY.
HIERARCHY NEEDS STRUCTURE.
STRUCTURE NEEDS SYSTEM.

AND THE SYSTEM MUST SURVIVE BEYOND A SINGLE IMAGE.
