The Central Question
How does a camera transform light, time and space into an image? A photograph records a particular configuration of light from a particular viewpoint at a particular moment. Photography is therefore both a technical system and a way of seeing.
The Photographic Matrix
Ontology of Light Capture
Foundation & The Camera System
Camera Obscura & History
- Camera Obscura: LIGHT + SMALL OPENING → IMAGE.
- Image inversion and optics as the conceptual ancestor.
- Timeline: Early Processes → 35mm → Digital → Computational.
Camera Types & Systems
- Analog: Light → film → chemical processing → print.
- Digital: Light → sensor → electronic data → image file.
- DSLR, Mirrorless, Medium Format, Smartphone.
Optics & Field of View
- Focal Length: Changes field of view and perspective relationships.
- Wide-angle vs Telephoto.
- Prime (Fixed) vs Zoom (Variable).
Exposure & Focus
Aperture & F-Number
- Controls the size of the lens opening.
- F-number relationship: Higher number (f/16) = smaller physical opening.
Shutter & Motion
- Controls duration of exposure.
- Fast: Freezes motion (1/1000). Slow: Records blur over time.
- Panning: Moving camera with subject to blur background.
The Exposure Triangle
- Balancing Aperture, Shutter, and ISO.
- ISO: Sensor sensitivity (Higher = more light, but more noise).
- Changing one parameter requires adjustment elsewhere.
Metering & Histogram
- Histogram: Represents tonal distribution (shadows, midtones, highlights).
- Evidence of data, not a universal recipe for a "perfect" photo.
- Exposure Compensation: Adjusting automated choices (e.g., for snow).
Focus & Depth of Field
- Depth of field depends on aperture, focal length, and distance.
- Bokeh: The visual rendering of out-of-focus areas.
Light & Composition
Light Quality & Direction
- Hard Light: Defined shadow transitions (direct sun, small source).
- Soft Light: Diffused windows, large apparent source.
- Direction: Front, side, back, top lighting.
White Balance & Temp
- Compensating for the colour of illumination.
- Mixed Light: Window light + indoor light = mixed colour.
Framing & Viewpoint
- Determines inclusion/exclusion and subject placement.
- Changing camera position is fundamentally different from changing focal length.
Photographic Composition
- Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines, Symmetry, Negative Space.
- Depth via layered framing (Foreground → Mid → Background).
- A sharp subject can fail if the background is cluttered.
Genres, Processing & Future
Photographic Genres
- Portrait, Landscape, Architecture, Street, Documentary.
- Macro (close-up scale), Wildlife, Astrophotography.
- Conceptual: Idea → Visual Metaphor → Staged Image.
Sequence & Essay
- A sequence communicates change over time.
- Photo Essay: Context → Characters → Action → Conclusion.
- Bridge toward Realm 11 (Moving Image).
Processing & Formats
- RAW: Sensor data for substantial non-destructive post-processing.
- JPEG: Compressed, convenient.
- Editing: Crop, exposure, colour grading, black & white translation.
Ethics, AI & Society
- Consent, dignity, manipulation, and documentary truth.
- Computational Photography: HDR, night mode, sensor merging.
- AI/Generative systems create content beyond original capture.
Foundation & Labs
- C6-8: Viewpoint, framing, visual documentation.
- The Exposure Project: Documenting aperture/shutter/ISO effects.
- Build "The Camera Eye Archive" (100 observations).
Realm 10 Doctrine
THE CAMERA DOES NOT SEE FOR YOU.
YOU CHOOSE WHERE TO STAND.
YOU CHOOSE WHAT TO INCLUDE/EXCLUDE.
THE LENS CHANGES THE VIEW.
THE APERTURE CHANGES THE DEPTH.
THE SHUTTER CHANGES THE TIME.
THE ISO CHANGES THE RECORDING CONDITIONS.
LIGHT CREATES THE IMAGE. FRAMING CREATES THE FIELD. SELECTION CREATES THE STORY.
AND THE PHOTOGRAPHER DECIDES WHAT THE WORLD WILL REMEMBER.
