A railway stretching across a continent cannot be run as one office.
Indian Railways is organised geographically and functionally into zones, divisions, production units, workshops, depots, control offices and other specialised establishments. THE RAILWAY HAS A MAP.
THE MAP IS PART OF THE MACHINE.

Zonal Railway Organisations
68
Operating Divisions

* The official Railway Board list explicitly identifies these 17 zones/railway organisations and 68 divisions. Operations require these precise administrative boundaries.

The Administrative Geography
WHAT IS A ZONE? WHAT IS A DIVISION?
ZONE
A large organisational territory of Indian Railways, headed by a General Manager. A zone is not simply a geographic colour on a map. It is a massive administrative organisation responsible for a very large railway territory and its constituent divisions.
THE MACRO LEVEL
DIVISION
The smaller operating unit beneath a zone. Tracks, stations, yards, maintenance, traffic, engineering, commercial, electrical, mechanical, signals, personnel, and accounts all exist within the division's operational geography.
THE OPERATING TERRITORY
ZONE
A massive regional railway headquarters.
↓
DIVISION
A major operating city.

STATION / DEPOT / YARD
Where the railway touches the ground.

Where does a Zone think?
At the top-level headquarters are the zone's major administrative and functional structures. A railway zone is effectively a multi-department government in miniature.

The Workshop
WHERE THE RAILWAY TAKES ITSELF APART
Workshops are different from ordinary railway stations. They are centres for repair, overhaul, maintenance, component work, inspection, and technical support.
MaintenanceOverhaulTechnical Support
The Depot
WHERE ASSETS SLEEP BETWEEN JOURNEYS
The resting and maintenance grounds. Includes coaching depots, locomotive sheds, electrical depots, signal depots, and engineering depots.

Production Units
THE FACTORY SIDE OF THE RAILWAY
Do not put production units underneath "workshops". They manufacture. CLW, ICF, MCF, RWF, and other officially recognised production organisations.

Control Office
THE RAILWAY'S NERVOUS CENTRES
A control office sits within the railway's operational geography to monitor and manage traffic. This is where movement is coordinated.
Traffic ManagementSection Control
The Station
THE FRONT DOOR OF THE RAILWAY
The passenger sees one station. The organisation sees dozens of departments: operating, commercial, engineering, electrical, signals, security, and administration.

The Yard
THE RAILWAY WITHOUT PASSENGERS
The hidden logistics engine. Freight, sorting, shunting, wagon management, train formation, and operational movements.

A Zone is almost a city-sized administrative organism.
The railway's organisation literally contains many of the institutions a large city needs.

The Division Atlas

Don't just list division names. Every division contains its own geographic territory, major routes, workshops, and operating departments.

ONE ZONE CONTAINS RADICALLY DIFFERENT LANDSCAPES
Mumbai Central Dense metropolitan railway environment
Vadodara Major passenger/freight corridors
Ahmedabad Major passenger/freight corridors
Ratlam Regional operating geography

The Recruitment Map
WHERE DOES EACH GATE LIVE?

An exam is not just a test. It is an entry point into a physical institution.

The RRB Map is not The Railway Map
RRB
Recruitment jurisdiction. This handles the examination and candidate selection.
Railway Zone / Division
Administrative and operating organisation. This handles the employment and deployment.

Your RRB name does not equal your exact future workplace.

THE RAILWAY IS NOT A LINE. IT IS A LAYERED GEOGRAPHY.

The 24-Hour Map
Some parts of the railway never really sleep: control, operations, stations, maintenance, healthcare, and security. The geographic map is directly tied to the human reality of night shifts, rosters, maintenance windows, and emergency response.

Special Portals
A railway is not a line drawn across India.
It is a network of territories, institutions, workshops, stations, depots, control rooms and people.
THE TRAIN CROSSES THE MAP.
THE RAILWAY LIVES INSIDE IT.
