ASSISTANT LOCO PILOT — ALP / THE HUMAN BEING INSIDE THE MACHINE
RAILWAY RECRUITMENT BOARDALPLOCOMOTIVETRAIN OPERATIONSSAFETYA-1 MEDICAL
A locomotive is a machine. A railway is a system.
Someone must sit at the boundary between the two. The Assistant Loco Pilot is part of the train-operating crew responsible for the safe and efficient movement of locomotives and trains. THE SENSES ARE TESTED.
THE MIND IS TESTED.
THE BODY IS TESTED.

What is an Assistant Loco Pilot?
What is ALP?
Assistant Loco Pilot.
Is ALP the same as a train driver?
ALP is part of the locomotive operating crew, rather than reducing the role simply to "driver."
What does Assistant Loco Pilot do?
Assists the Loco Pilot in the safe and efficient movement of trains, monitoring signals, track conditions, and locomotive performance.
ALP vs Loco Pilot?
The Loco Pilot holds principal operating responsibility. The ALP is the supporting operating role and the beginning of the career pathway.
What qualification is needed?
Specific technical qualifications (ITI, Diploma, or Degree) in prescribed engineering trades.
What is the medical standard?
A-1. Stringent visual and physical requirements.

The train is not merely being driven. It is being continuously monitored and operated.
The Operating Crew
ASSISTANT LOCO PILOT
The Supporting Role
ALP is not simply a junior version of "driver"; it is a defined railway operating post within the crew structure.
LOCO PILOT
The Principal Role
The ultimate authority in the cab, responsible for the locomotive. The destination of the ALP career pathway.
ALP is not just a driving test.

Subjects
Mathematics · Mental Ability · General Science · General Awareness.
Purpose
A universal screening stage. Marks here typically qualify candidates for the next stage based on CEN rules.
CBT 2
WHERE TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE TAKES OVER
PART A
Mathematics · General Intelligence & Reasoning · Basic Science & Engineering.
PART B
Trade / Technical Knowledge. ALP selection eventually reaches the candidate's technical capability.

The Aptitude Gate
THE MACHINE TESTS THE HUMAN
CBAT
The Computer-Based Aptitude Test exists specifically for ALP candidates. CBAT evaluates aptitude relevant to railway operating safety.
Reaction
Concentration
Perception
Memory
Spatial Ability
Why does a railway recruitment test care so much about reaction and perception?
Because a locomotive operator works inside an environment where variables interact instantly:
SpeedSignals TimingTraction BrakingWeather Track ConditionsCommunication
The aptitude test is not an ornamental extra. It belongs to the safety architecture of the job.
The Medical Gate

STRINGENT MEDICAL STANDARD
The current 2026 ALP notification assigns the post an A-1 medical standard and explicitly warns that the medical requirements are stringent.
2026 RULE — CHECK CURRENT CEN Candidates who have undergone LASIK or another surgical procedure to correct refractive error are NOT eligible for the ALP post.

* The CEN explicitly states that vacancies may increase or decrease according to Railway Administration requirements.
Why so much medical scrutiny?
Because this is a safety-sensitive role.
The railway is not testing your eyesight because it wants perfection. It is testing the capabilities it considers necessary for safe railway operation.
The Shift Room
Railway operations run across the clock, so working patterns depend on roster, railway division, traffic and assignment. Do not expect a universal 9-to-5 schedule.
The Journey Room
ALP is not the destination. It is the beginning of a locomotive-operating career.

The "Train Driver" Myth
"ALP just drives trains."
Reality: It's a safety-critical operating profession involving technical knowledge, procedures, and strict medical standards.
"If I have a mechanical degree, medical doesn't matter."
Reality: Medical fitness is an essential part of selection.
"Once CBT is cleared, selection is done."
Reality: CBAT, DV and medical remain highly relevant stages.

Special Portals
A locomotive can carry a thousand people.
But for every kilometre, someone must remain alert to the machine, the track, the signals and the rules.
THE LOCOMOTIVE DOES NOT THINK.
THE OPERATING CREW MUST.
ALP is where railway engineering, human attention and public safety meet.
