Core Ontological Distinctions

1. The Hybrid Cycle: Gaseous vs. Sedimentary

Unlike Phosphorus (strictly sedimentary) or Nitrogen (strictly gaseous), Sulphur is a Hybrid Cycle. It has a massive sedimentary reservoir (pyrite/gypsum rocks) but also a highly active, volatile gaseous phase ($SO_2$, $H_2S$, DMS) that allows it to circulate globally through the atmosphere.

2. Assimilatory vs. Dissimilatory Sulphate Reduction

Assimilatory Reduction: Plants and microbes take up sulphate ($SO_4^{2-}$) and reduce it to build organic amino acids (cysteine). The sulphur stays inside the organism. Dissimilatory Reduction: Anaerobic bacteria (like Desulfovibrio) use sulphate instead of oxygen to "breathe", reducing it to Hydrogen Sulphide ($H_2S$) gas which is expelled outside the cell.

3. DMS vs. SO₂ (Biogenic vs. Anthropogenic)

Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) is a biogenic gas produced naturally by marine phytoplankton; it seeds clouds and helps cool the planet. Sulphur Dioxide ($SO_2$) is mostly anthropogenic (burning coal/smelting) or volcanic; while it also cools the planet via aerosols, it aggressively reacts with water to form destructive Acid Rain ($H_2SO_4$).
