Why Weathering is the Indispensable Foundation of the Biosphere & Economy (NCERT)

Weathering processes are responsible for breaking down the rocks into smaller fragments and preparing the way for formation of not only regolith and soils, but also erosion and mass movements. As NCERT highlights, biomes and biodiversity are basically a result of forests (vegetation), and forests depend directly upon the depth of weathering mantles. Furthermore, weathering drives the enrichment and concentration of valuable ores of aluminium (bauxite), iron, manganese, nickel, and copper—making their extraction economically viable.

Core Distinctions

1. The Biome–Biodiversity–Weathering Mantle Chain (NCERT Verbatim Logic)

"Biomes and biodiversity is basically a result of forests (vegetation) and forests depend upon the depth of weathering mantles." If rocks are not weathered into a deep regolith mantle that can store water and release mineral nutrients, only sparse scrub can grow—proving that weathering depth governs planetary biodiversity.

2. How Weathering Enriches Ores (NCERT Economic Significance)

When rocks undergo weathering, groundwater leaches away unwanted soluble materials (such as silica, calcium, and sodium), leaving the valuable, less-soluble metals concentrated into a much smaller residual volume. Without this natural enrichment, mining low-grade deposits of aluminium (bauxite), iron, manganese, nickel, and copper would not be economically viable.

3. Carbonate vs. Silicate Weathering in the Global Carbon Cycle

Carbonate weathering absorbs 1 mole of $\text{CO}_2$ on land but releases 1 mole back when marine organisms precipitate $\text{CaCO}_3$ (net zero over $10^5$ years). Silicate weathering (Urey Reaction) absorbs 2 moles of $\text{CO}_2$ and releases only 1 mole during marine carbonate precipitation—acting as Earth's permanent net $\text{CO}_2$ sink.
