The General Term "Denudation" & Its Driving Forces (NCERT)
All exogenic geomorphic processes are covered under a single general term—Denudation, which means to "strip off" or "uncover." Deriving their energy from the Sun's atmospheric circulation and tectonic gradients, denudational processes operate through three distinct process-force pairs (NCERT Figure 6.1): 1) Weathering (driven by gravitational/molecular stresses & chemical actions), 2) Mass Movements (driven by gravitational force), and 3) Erosion/Transportation (driven by kinetic energy).
I. Gradation Mechanics & The Concept of Denudation (NCERT)
Gradation Equilibrium
- Wearing down of relief variations
- Brings crust to a common level
- Driven by exogenic agents
Degradation + Aggradation
- Degradation: Erodes high relief
- Aggradation: Fills low basins
- Simultaneous mass transfer
What is Denudation?
- Umbrella term for all exogenic
- Latin "Denudare" = To strip off
- Uncovers deeper underlying rock
Exogenic Energy Source
- Atmosphere determined by Sun
- Plus tectonic gradients (NCERT)
- Couples climate with relief
Slope & Gradient Engine
- Tectonic uplift creates slope ($\theta$)
- Converts potential to kinetic
- Steeper slope = higher shear
Graded Profile of Equilibrium
- Concave-upward smooth curve
- Transport capacity = sediment load
- Asymptotic to mean sea level
Why Exogenic Never Wins
EXOGENIC LEVELING
- Exogenic fails to ever even out
- Because tectonic uplift continues
- Maintains global relief diversity
II. Physical Stresses & Chemical Actions on Earth Materials (NCERT)
What is Stress? ($\sigma = F/A$)
- Force applied per unit area
- Produced in solids by pushing
- Or pulling — induces deformation
Shear Stress (Separating)
- Forces acting along faces of rock
- Separating force (NCERT)
- Breaks rocks & causes slippage
Molecular Stresses
MELTING
- Caused by temperature changes
- Crystallisation (ice/salt growth)
- And melting inside rock pores
Chemical Actions
- Loosen bonds between grains
- Dissolve soluble minerals
- Or cementing materials (NCERT)
Stress Fatigue Failure
- Basic reason that leads to
- Weathering, mass movements,
- And erosion is development of stress
Shear Stress vs. Strength
- Rock holds until stress exceeds
- Internal cohesive shear strength
- Water pore pressure drops strength
Regolith Mantle Production
- Stresses shatter upper bedrock
- Produces loose regolith blanket
- Feedstock for mass wasting/erosion
III. The Denudational Triad: Process vs. Driving Force (NCERT Fig 6.1)
NCERT Fig 6.1 Triad
- 1. Weathering (In-situ)
- 2. Mass Movements (Bulk gravity)
- 3. Erosion / Transportation
1. Weathering Driving Forces
- Gravitational & molecular stresses
- And/or chemical actions (NCERT)
- In-situ with little/no motion
2. Mass Movement Force
- Driven by Gravitational Force alone
- No geomorphic agent participates
- Debris carries kinetic agent with it
3. Erosion / Transport Force
- Driven by Kinetic Energy ($1/2\ mv^2$)
- Of moving water, ice, wind, waves
- Acquires & transports rock debris
Weathering Prerequisite Rule
- Weathering aids mass wasting/erosion
- But is NOT a pre-condition for them!
- Unweathered rock also erodes (NCERT)
Mass Movement vs. Erosion
- Mass movement does NOT come under
- Erosion even though matter moves
- Because gravity is not a mobile agent
Deposition Mechanics
- Consequence of erosion, not an agent
- Occurs on gentler slopes when
- Agents lose velocity & energy
IV. Climatic, Lithological & Structural Controls on Denudation
Temp & Precipitation
- Two most important climatic elements
- That control all exogenic processes
- Dictate chemical vs physical rate
Micro-Climatic Modifiers
- Altitude & aspect insolation
- Diurnal range & freeze-thaw cycles
- Wind velocity & vegetation cover
Morphoclimatic Regimes
- Humid tropics: Deep chemical decay
- Arid deserts: Thermal & wind wear
- Periglacial: Frost-wedging dominance
Rock Type & Structure
- Folds, faults, joints, bedding dip
- Mineral hardness & chemical solubility
- Permeability & fracturing density
Differential Denudation
- Same climate, different rocks
- Or same rock, different climates
- Produces distinct landform relief
Cumulative Fatigue over Time
SEVERE FATIGUE
- Exogenic actions are small & slow
- Imperceptible in short time spans
- In the long run, affect rocks severely
Indian Denudation Contrast
- Himalayas: World's highest (~1–5 mm/yr)
- Steep relief + monsoon + glacials
- Peninsular shield: Slow senile rate
Core Distinctions
• Weathering: Driven by Gravitational/Molecular Stresses and/or Chemical Actions.
• Mass Movements: Driven by Gravitational Force.
• Erosion / Transportation: Driven by Kinetic Energy.
• Trap A: "Weathering is a pre-requisite for mass movement and erosion." → FALSE! Weathering aids them considerably, but is not a pre-condition.
• Trap B: "Mass movements are a type of erosion." → FALSE! Mass movements are driven directly by gravity with no geomorphic agent (water, wind, ice) participating.
Across all Earth climatic zones, the two most important climatic elements that control all exogenic denudational processes are 1) Temperature and 2) Precipitation.
