The Four Classic NCERT Fluvial Erosional Landform Families
As running water cuts downward and laterally into bedrock, it carves four major erosional landform groups (NCERT Chapter 7): 1) Valleys (evolving from rills and gullies into V-shaped valleys, equal-width Gorges in hard rocks, and stepped Canyons in horizontal strata), 2) Potholes and Plunge Pools drilled by rotating pebble vortices and waterfalls, 3) Incised or Entrenched Meanders cut deep into hard bedrock during uplift, and 4) River Terraces (Paired and Unpaired) marking former valley floors.
I. Valleys: V-Shaped Valleys, Gorges & Canyons (NCERT Core)
Rill → Gully → Valley
- Valleys start as small & narrow rills
- Rills develop into long & wide gullies
- Gullies deepen & widen into valleys
V-Shaped Valley
- Youthful vertical downcutting (corrasion)
- Accompanied by mass wasting of walls
- Forms classic V-shaped cross profile
The Gorge (NCERT)
- Deep valley with very steep to straight sides
- Almost EQUAL in width at top & bottom
- Forms in hard rocks (NCERT High-Yield)
The Canyon (NCERT)
- Characterised by steep step-like side slopes
- May be as deep as a gorge
- WIDER at its top than at its bottom!
Gorge vs. Canyon Lithology
HARD ROCKS
SEDIMENTARY
- Canyon is a variant of gorge (NCERT)
- Gorges form in massive hard rocks
- Canyons in horizontal bedded sediments
Interlocking Spurs
- Youthful river winds around hard ridges
- Alternating overlapping valley spurs
- Erode back into bluffs in maturity
Structural Benches
- Differential erosion of hard/soft beds
- Leaves ledges on canyon walls
- Controlled by rock, not base-level!
II. Potholes, Plunge Pools, Waterfalls & Rapids (NCERT Core)
Potholes (Rock Grinders)
- Circular depressions in rocky stream beds
- Pebbles & boulders rotate like drills
- Dimensions grow via eddy abrasion
Pothole Valley Deepening
- Series of potholes form along bed
- Eventually join & coalesce together
- Stream valley gets deepened (NCERT)
Plunge Pools (Waterfall Base)
- Large & deep holes at base of waterfalls
- Sheer impact of falling water + boulders
- Deepens basin well below river bed
Waterfall Caprock Retreat
- Hard resistant caprock (dolomite/basalt)
- Splash undercuts underlying soft shale
- Overhang collapses $\to$ waterfall retreats
Rapids & Cataracts
- Steeply dipping alternating hard/soft ribs
- Turbulent white-water rapids
- Transitory features of youthful stage
Knickpoints (Rejuvenation)
- Sharp break of slope in long profile
- Marks head of renewed downcutting
- Triggered by uplift or sea-level fall
Evorsion & Eddy Vortices
- Vertical whirlpool vortex torque
- Drills cylindrical shafts in granite/basalt
- Cavitation implodes micro-bubbles
III. Incised / Entrenched Meanders & River Terraces (NCERT Core)
Alluvial vs. Incised Meander
FLOODPLAIN
HARD ROCK
- Gentle slopes: Lateral alluvial meanders
- Very deep & wide meanders cut in
- Hard rocks = Incised/Entrenched (NCERT)
Genesis of Incised Meanders
- Wavy meander starts on original surface
- Entrenches into underlying bedrock
- Due to uplift of land or fall in sea level
Entrenched vs. Ingrown
- Entrenched: Rapid uplift (symmetrical walls)
- Ingrown: Slow uplift (asymmetrical slip-off)
- Key indicator of tectonic rejuvenation
Abandoned Bedrock Rincon
- Incised meander cuts through rock neck
- Leaves high dry circular canyon loop
- Called a Rincon (Colorado / Ken river)
River Terraces (NCERT)
- Surfaces marking old valley floor
- Or former floodplain levels
- Product of vertical erosion by stream
Bedrock vs. Alluvial Terrace
BARE ROCK
GRAVEL FILL
- 1) Bare bedrock surfaces without alluvium
- 2) Alluvial terraces consisting of
- Stream deposits incised by river (NCERT)
Paired vs. Unpaired Terraces
- Paired: Same elevation on either side
- Indicates rapid vertical downcutting
- Unpaired: Alternating levels (slow cut)
IV. Causes of Terraces, Peneplains & Indian Fluvial Erosional Landforms
Unpaired Terrace Mechanics
- Present on one side or at different elevations
- Simultaneous slow downcutting +
- Lateral shifting of the channel
4 Causes of Terraces (NCERT)
- 1) Receding water level (sea-level drop)
- 2) Tectonic uplift of land
- 3) Climatic hydrological change & 4) Flow
Peneplain & Monadnocks
- End-product of fluvial erosional cycle
- Undulating plain near base level
- Chotanagpur & Aravalli peneplains
Himalayan Antecedent Gorges
- Indus Gorge at Bunji (~5,200 m deep)
- Sutlej at Shipki La & Kosi Gorge
- Brahmaputra Dihang/Korbo Gorge (Namcha Barwa)
Peninsular Gorges & Canyons
- Gandikota (AP): Pennar River ("Grand Canyon of India")
- Garadia Mahadev (RJ): Chambal gorge
- Bhedaghat (MP): Narmada Marble Rocks
Major Indian Waterfalls
- Kunchikal (Varahi) & Jog/Gersoppa (Sharavathi)
- Shivasamudram (Kaveri) & Dhuandhar (Narmada)
- Hundru (Subarnarekha) & Chitrakote (Indravati)
Nighoj Potholes & Terraces
& ALAKNANDA TERRACES
- Nighoj (Maharashtra): Kukadi basalt potholes
- Srinagar (Garhwal): Alaknanda paired terraces
- Subarnarekha incised meanders (Jharkhand)
Core Distinctions
• Gorge: Deep valley with very steep to straight sides; almost equal in width at its top as well as its bottom; commonly forms in massive hard rocks.
• Canyon: Characterised by steep step-like side slopes; wider at its top than at its bottom; commonly forms in horizontal bedded sedimentary rocks.
• Paired Terraces: Present at the same elevation on either side of the river; indicate rapid vertical downcutting caused by tectonic uplift, sea-level retreat, or climate/discharge change.
• Unpaired Terraces: Present at different elevations on opposite banks (or only on one bank); indicate slow downcutting combined with lateral shifting of the channel.
Potholes are small cylindrical depressions drilled into rocky stream beds by rotating pebbles in eddies. Plunge Pools are much larger and deeper basins excavated specifically at the foot of waterfalls due to the sheer hydraulic impact of falling water and rotation of boulders.
