Harappan Mysteries, Nature Worship & The Roots of Animism
REALM 67 — PRE-VEDIC & INDIGENOUS
MICRO-REALM 01
Indus Valley (IVC)
- Mature Phase: ~2600 to 1900 BCE.
- Highly urbanized, egalitarian society with no obvious palaces or grand temples.
- Religious beliefs are inferred entirely from material artifacts (seals, terracotta, burials) rather than deciphered texts.
MICRO-REALM 02
The Pashupati Seal
- Discovered at Mohenjo-Daro (Seal 420).
- Depicts a three-faced, horned figure sitting in a yogic posture, surrounded by animals.
- Often interpreted by John Marshall as 'Proto-Shiva' (Lord of Beasts).
MICRO-REALM 03
Mother Goddess
- Numerous terracotta figurines of females found across IVC sites.
- Distinctive fan-shaped headdresses, heavy jewelry, and exaggerated forms.
- Suggests a widespread fertility cult or earth-mother veneration, a precursor to Shakti worship.
MICRO-REALM 04
The Great Bath
- Located in Mohenjo-Daro; the earliest public water tank in the ancient world.
- Waterproofed with bitumen.
- Likely used for ritual bathing and purification ceremonies, establishing a core tenet of later Indian religions.
MICRO-REALM 05
Animal Worship
- Seals frequently depict the 'Unicorn' (likely a profile of a bull), humped zebu bulls, tigers, and elephants.
- Animals are often shown with a 'manger' or incense burner, implying veneration or totemic significance.
MICRO-REALM 06
Tree Veneration
- Seals depict deities standing within the branches of the Pipal (Sacred Fig) tree.
- Shows human figures bowing or bringing offerings to the tree spirit.
- The Pipal remains sacred in modern Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.
MICRO-REALM 07
Fire Altars
- Found primarily in Kalibangan (Rajasthan) and Lothal (Gujarat).
- Brick-lined pits containing ash and animal bones.
- Suggests regional variations in IVC religion, pointing to early fire sacrifices (precursors to Vedic Yajna).
MICRO-REALM 08
Burial Practices
- Predominantly inhumation (burial) rather than cremation.
- Bodies laid north-south, accompanied by grave goods (pottery, simple ornaments, mirrors).
- Indicates a belief in an afterlife where material goods were necessary, but devoid of monumental royal tombs.
MICRO-REALM 09
Animism
- The foundational indigenous belief that non-human entities (rocks, rivers, mountains) possess spiritual essence.
- Predates formal pantheons.
- Survives today in Gramadevata (village deity) worship across rural India.
MICRO-REALM 10
Shamanism & Magic
- Evidence of amulets and charms worn to ward off evil spirits.
- Figures in horned headdresses on seals may represent shamans or priests acting as intermediaries between the physical and spirit worlds.
MICRO-REALM 11
Naga Worship
- Pre-Vedic veneration of serpents (Nagas), associated with water, the underworld, and fertility.
- Often intertwined with animism and the protection of treasures.
- Seamlessly absorbed into later Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain iconographies.
MICRO-REALM 12
Legacy & Continuity
- IVC did not entirely vanish; its religious DNA permeated the subcontinent.
- Yoga postures, Linga worship, sacred baths, and reverence for the Pipal tree and cattle show an unbroken continuum from 2500 BCE to modern Hinduism.
