REALM 106 — AYURVEDA & MEDICINE
MICRO-REALM 01
Ayurveda
- Literally translates to the "Science of Life" ( Ayus = life, Veda = knowledge).
- An ancient, holistic medical system originating in the Vedic period as an Upaveda (subsidiary Veda) of the Atharvaveda.
- Focuses fundamentally on preserving health in the healthy, and then curing disease in the sick.
MICRO-REALM 02
Five Great Elements
- The foundational philosophy that everything in the universe, including the human body, is composed of Pancha Mahabhuta .
- Prithvi (Earth), Jala (Water), Tejas (Fire), Vayu (Air), and Akasha (Ether/Space).
- Disease occurs when the balance of these elements is disturbed.
MICRO-REALM 03
Tridosha Theory
- The five elements combine into three biological humors or energies (Doshas) that govern physiology.
- Vata (Air + Ether): Movement, nervous system.
- Pitta (Fire + Water): Digestion, metabolism, energy.
- Kapha (Earth + Water): Structure, lubrication, immunity.
MICRO-REALM 04
Charaka Samhita
- The foundational text of internal medicine (Kayachikitsa), compiled by Charaka around 300 BCE – 200 CE.
- Emphasizes the absolute importance of diet (Ahara) and lifestyle (Vihara) in preventing illness.
- Contains detailed chapters on anatomy, embryology, and medical ethics.
MICRO-REALM 05
Sushruta Samhita
- The foundational text of surgery (Shalya Chikitsa), compiled by Sushruta (c. 600 BCE).
- Describes over 300 surgical procedures, 120 surgical instruments (Yantras and Shastras), and the use of wine for anesthesia.
- Includes techniques for treating fractures, extracting foreign bodies, and excising tumors.
MICRO-REALM 06
Pioneering Plastic Surgery
- Sushruta is universally recognized as the "Father of Plastic Surgery."
- His most famous procedure was Rhinoplasty (reconstruction of the nose).
- He utilized a pedicle flap cut from the patient's cheek or forehead to rebuild noses that had been amputated as legal punishment.
MICRO-REALM 07
Dravyaguna (Pharmacology)
- The vast Ayurvedic study of medicinal substances.
- Drugs are classified by their Rasa (taste), Guna (qualities), Virya (potency), and Vipaka (post-digestive effect).
- Utilizes thousands of herbs (like Ashwagandha, Neem, Turmeric), alongside minerals and animal products (milk, ghee, honey).
MICRO-REALM 08
The Eight Branches
- Ayurveda is formally divided into eight specialized branches (Ashtanga):
- 1. Internal Medicine, 2. Surgery, 3. ENT/Ophthalmology, 4. Pediatrics, 5. Toxicology (Agada Tantra), 6. Psychiatry/Spirit Healing, 7. Rejuvenation (Rasayana), 8. Aphrodisiacs (Vajikarana).
MICRO-REALM 09
Pulse Diagnosis
- Nadi Pariksha is the primary, highly sophisticated diagnostic tool of an Ayurvedic physician (Vaidya).
- By placing three fingers on the radial artery, the physician detects the exact imbalance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha within the patient's body.
MICRO-REALM 10
Sister Sciences
- Yoga and Ayurveda are inseparable Vedic sciences.
- While Yoga focuses on spiritual liberation and mental discipline, Ayurveda provides the necessary physical foundation of health.
- Asanas (postures) and Pranayama (breath control) are prescribed directly in Ayurveda as physical therapies.
MICRO-REALM 11
Rasa Shastra
- The medieval branch of Ayurvedic Iatrochemistry (8th–12th centuries).
- Focuses on the incredibly complex purification (Shodhana) and incineration (Marana) of heavy metals (gold, silver, iron) and toxic minerals (mercury, sulfur).
- Transforms them into highly potent, safe, bio-available ashes (Bhasmas) for medicine.
MICRO-REALM 12
Global Transmission
- Ayurvedic knowledge heavily influenced early Tibetan and Chinese medicine via Buddhist monks.
- During the 8th century, the Charaka and Sushruta Samhitas were translated into Arabic in Baghdad (as the Kitab-i-Susrud ), deeply influencing Islamic medicine and later European practices.
