The Calculus of Human Time
A population is never a static monument; it is a living reservoir in perpetual motion. Every second, the global human stock is recalibrated by two biological valves—Fertility (Births) and Mortality (Deaths)—and two spatial valves—Immigration and Emigration. Mastering these vital rates, balancing equations, and structural characteristics provides the mathematical lens required to read the past and project the future of any society.

SECTOR IV — NATURAL GROWTH VS MIGRATION BALANCE
The Balancing Equation
- $P_2 = P_1 + (B - D) + (I - E)$
- Universal conservation of people
- Biological plus spatial accounting
- Actual growth calculation
Natural Increase ($\text{CBR} - \text{CDR}$)
- Pure biological surplus/deficit
- Excludes migratory movements
- Rate of Natural Increase (RNI)
- Expressed as percentage/thousand
Induced Migratory Growth
- Net migration ($I - E$)
- In-migration minus out-migration
- Dominates urban & regional shifts
- Offsets sub-replacement fertility
Closed vs Open Systems
- Closed: zero migration boundary
- Earth as closed population
- Open: porous regional borders
- Cities as hyper-open systems
Demographic Momentum
- Growth despite TFR $\le 2.1$
- Large young reproductive base
- Braking supertanker inertia
- Negative momentum in ageing
Stationary Equilibrium (ZPG)
- $\text{Births} + \text{Immigration} = \text{Deaths} + \text{Emigration}$
- Constant total population size
- Stationary vs stable population
- End-stage transition equilibrium

Core Distinctions (Do Not Confuse)
Natural Growth is strictly biological ($\text{Births} - \text{Deaths}$). Actual Growth includes spatial mobility: $(\text{Births} - \text{Deaths}) + (\text{In-Migration} - \text{Out-Migration})$.
Population Growth Rate vs. Absolute Population AdditionEven when a country's percentage growth rate declines (e.g., India post-1981), its absolute decadal addition can still be massive because the smaller percentage is applied to a much larger base population ($P_1$).
Replacement Fertility (TFR = 2.1) vs. Zero Population Growth (ZPG)Reaching TFR = 2.1 does not immediately stop population growth. Due to Demographic Momentum (a large existing cohort of young mothers), population continues to grow for 3–4 decades before reaching ZPG.
