The Internal Anatomy of a Society
Total population counts tell us how many people exist; Population Characteristics reveal who they are, how they live, and what they can achieve. A nation's demographic vitality is determined by the balance between biological structure (Age and Sex Composition), human capability (Literacy and Education), economic responsibility (Dependency Ratios), and productive engagement (Workforce Participation).
SECTOR I — AGE COMPOSITION & STRUCTURAL PYRAMIDS

Working-Age Engine (15–59)
- Economically productive core
- Income and tax generators
- Household providers and carers
- Engine of demographic dividend
Elderly Cohort (60+)
- Post-productive elder phase

- Fiscal and economic drag
Median Age Index
- Divides population into halves
- Sub-20 in youthful Africa

- India median age ~28.5 years
SECTOR II — SEX COMPOSITION & GENDER PARITY
Sex Ratio Conventions
- India: Females per 1,000 males
- UN: Males per 100 females
- Fundamental demographic balance
- Determines marriage markets
Primary vs Secondary Ratio
- Primary: ratio at conception
- Secondary: ratio at live birth
- Male excess in natural biology
- Differential intrauterine survival
Natural SRB (105:100)
- Biological baseline norm
- 105 male per 100 female births
- Compensates higher male infant mortality
- Global invariant biological baseline
Child Sex Ratio (0–6 CSR)
- Severe female deficit indicator
- Son-meta preference manifestation
- Sex-selective diagnostic abuse
- India 2011 CSR dipped to 918
Tertiary Sex Ratio Shift
- Female survival advantage in old age
- Feminization of ageing cohort
- Widowhood vulnerability rise
- Inverts sex ratio in late life
Missing Women Paradigm
- Amartya Sen analytical framework
- Over 100M missing globally
- Cumulative post-natal neglect
- Differential nutrition and care
SECTOR III — LITERACY & EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT
Effective Literacy (Age 7+)
- Census standard: aged 7 and above
- Read and write with understanding
- Excludes children aged 0–6
- Core human development gateway
Gender Literacy Gap
- Male vs female literacy divergence
- Social barrier to female schooling
- India 2011 gap ~16.68 percentage points
- Gradual inter-decadal convergence
Rural–Urban Literacy Divide
- School infrastructure disparities
- Agricultural child labour pull
- Urban educational concentration
- Rural female double disadvantage
Educational Attainment
- Primary completion rates
- Secondary transition bottlenecks
- Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER)
- Higher & technical qualification stock
Literacy–Fertility Inverse
- Educated women delay marriage
- Higher contraceptive adoption
- Drop in wanted family size
- Strongest catalyst for TFR drop
Digital & Functional Skills
- Beyond mere signature literacy
- Financial and digital interface skills
- Workplace technology competence
- 21st-century equity frontier
SECTOR IV — DEPENDENCY, SUPPORT & VULNERABILITY
Total Dependency Ratio
- Overall non-working load
- U-shaped curve across transition
- Trough marks demographic window
- High in pre- and post-dividend
Young-Age Dependency
- $(0\text{–}14) / 15\text{–}59 \times 100$
- High in high-fertility states
- Demands massive school capital
- Rapidly falling across India
Old-Age Dependency (OADR)
- $(60+) / 15\text{–}59 \times 100$
- Surging in post-transition zones
- Pension and healthcare strain
- Key issue in Kerala & Tamil Nadu
Economic Support Ratio
- Effective producers vs consumers
- Weighted by age-specific consumption
- Captures true economic burden
- National Transfer Accounts metric
Caregiver Systems
- Joint family safety net erosion
- Nuclearization of households
- Informal female caregiver burden
- Emerging formal eldercare market
Composite Vulnerability
- Intersecting age and poverty risks
- Single elderly female households
- Child-headed or skipped-generation homes
- Social security net coverage
SECTOR V — WORKFORCE & OCCUPATIONAL STRUCTURE
Census Worker Typology
- Main: 183+ days active work
- Marginal: less than 183 days
- Non-workers: dependents and students
- Standardized economic taxonomy
Work Participation (WPR)
- Total workers ÷ total population
- India WPR ~39.8% (2011 Census)
- Male WPR (~53%) vs Female (~25%)
- State-level variation across India
Primary Sector Dominance
- Cultivators vs agricultural labourers
- Over 45% workforce still on soil
- Disguised underemployment drag
- Slow pace of structural exit
Secondary Manufacturing Share
- Factory & construction labour
- Stagnant ~20–25% workforce share
- Missing mass-manufacturing miracle
- Capital-intensive industrial bypass
Tertiary Sector Surge
- Trade, transport, banking, IT
- High GDP share vs moderate job share
- Premature deindustrialization thesis
- High-skill knowledge service island
Informal Workforce Mass
- Over 80–85% unorganized labour
- Zero formal contracts or pensions
- Daily-wage and gig precarity
- Dual-economy structural trap
SECTOR VI — REGIONAL VARIATIONS & INDIAN MOSAIC
North–South Cleavage
- Northern youth and high dependency
- Southern greying and replacement TFR
- Fiscal and political delimitation tensions
- Inter-state demographic transfer pressure
Scheduled Tribes Profile
- High sex ratio parity (~990)

- Income effect withdraws rural women
- Education rise without job creation
- Awaiting turnaround with tertiary growth
Core Distinctions (Do Not Confuse)
Overall Sex Ratio counts all age groups and can look balanced due to high female longevity in old age. Child Sex Ratio (CSR) counts children aged 0–6, exposing modern prenatal sex-selection and infant discrimination unbiased by female elder survival.
Crude Literacy Rate vs. Effective Literacy RateCrude Literacy divides literates by the entire population (including newborn babies). Effective Literacy divides literates by population aged 7 and above only, giving the true functional capability of society.
Labour Force Participation (LFPR) vs. Work Participation (WPR)LFPR includes everyone employed plus those actively seeking work (unemployed). WPR (or Worker Population Ratio) includes strictly those who are currently employed.
