The Sensory Gate

Sensation · Perception · How the World Enters the Mind

The Construction of Experience

How does physical energy become conscious experience, and how does the brain construct a meaningful representation of the world? The mind does not simply receive a perfect duplicate of reality. It detects, translates, organizes, and infers to build the universe you experience.

EXTERNAL WORLD → PHYSICAL ENERGY → SENSORY RECEPTORS → TRANSDUCTION → NEURAL SIGNAL → SENSATION → PERCEPTION → ORGANIZED EXPERIENCE → MEANING

Taxonomy of Sensation & Perception

TAXONOMY A

Sensation & Transduction

  • NODE 03: Physical Energy (Light, Sound, Pressure).
  • NODE 04: Transduction: Conversion of energy into neural signals.
  • NODE 07: Sensory Adaptation (Fading of stable stimuli).
TAXONOMY B

Psychophysics

  • NODE 05: Absolute & Difference Thresholds (JND).
  • NODE 44: Weber's & Fechner's Laws.
  • NODE 06: Signal Detection Theory (Hits vs False Alarms).
TAXONOMY C

Vision

  • NODE 08: Light waves & Eye Optics.
  • NODE 09: Retina (Rods for low light, Cones for colour).
  • NODE 10 & 12: Colour theories & Depth perception (Binocular cues).
TAXONOMY D

Hearing

  • NODE 14: Sound (Frequency/Pitch, Amplitude/Loudness).
  • NODE 15: Cochlea, Hair cells & Auditory Transduction.

TAXONOMY J

Multisensory Integration

  • NODE 35: Brain combines vision, hearing, and touch into one experience.
  • NODE 36: Cross-modal illusions (e.g., McGurk effect).
  • Sensory conflict resolution.
TAXONOMY K

Body & Self

  • NODE 34: Body schema and Body image.
  • Sense of Ownership and Agency.
  • Multisensory integration builds the self-model.
TAXONOMY L

Development & Culture

  • NODE 38: Experience-dependent refinement & critical periods.
  • NODE 37: Cultural filters and learned categories.
  • NODE 42: Individual differences in perception.
TAXONOMY M

Perception as Construction

  • NODE 39 & 40: The brain does not receive a perfect copy of the world.
  • NODE 41: Reality vs Representation.
  • NODE 48: The Perception-Action loop.

Core Distinctions

Sensation vs. Perception

Sensation is your eye detecting a specific wavelength of light (Detecting data). Perception is your brain understanding that the light means a "Red Stop Sign" (Interpreting meaning).

Illusion vs. Hallucination

An illusion is a misinterpretation of a real physical stimulus (e.g., a straight stick looking bent in water). A hallucination is perceiving something when no external physical stimulus exists.

Bottom-Up vs. Top-Down

Bottom-Up builds a picture strictly from raw sensory details. Top-Down uses your prior knowledge and expectations to guess or fill in the blanks before all the details arrive.

The Perceptual Loop

NODE 49: The continuous construction of reality.
