The Foundations of Psychological Science
What is Psychology, what does it study, and how does it study human beings? This foundational realm maps the architecture of the discipline—from the biological roots of the mind to the social complexities of behavior, separating rigorous scientific methodology from assumption, intuition, and pseudoscience.
The Observer's Matrix
Taxonomy of Psychological Methodology
The Discipline
- NODE 01: Scientific study of behaviour & mental processes.
- Observable vs unobservable phenomena.
- NODE 02: Subject matter spans Cognition, Emotion, Learning to Society.
- Bridge between natural and social sciences.
Mind, Brain, Behaviour
- NODE 03: The physical brain generates the subjective mind.
- Mental processes influence external behaviour.
- Crucial: Brain ≠ Mind ≠ Behaviour.
- NODE 04: Goals: Describe, Explain, Predict, Control.
History & Perspectives
- NODE 06: Roots in Philosophy & Physiology.
- Wundt (Structuralism) to James (Functionalism).
- NODE 07: Perspectives: Biological, Behavioural, Cognitive, Psychodynamic, Humanistic, Sociocultural, Evolutionary.
Fields of Psychology
- NODE 08: The Discipline Tree.
- Basic: Cognitive, Developmental, Biological, Social.
- Applied: Clinical, Educational, Industrial/Org.
- Emerging: Positive, Environmental, Neuropsychology.
Scientific Thinking
- NODE 05: Empirical evidence, Objectivity, Falsifiability.
- NODE 09: Observation: Naturalistic vs Controlled. Observe → Record → Interpret.
- NODE 10 & 11: Question → Hypothesis (Testable) → Theory (Organizes findings).
Research Methods
- NODE 14: Experimental (Manipulation & Control).
- Correlational (Prediction, no causation).
- Descriptive (Survey, Case Study, Archival).
- NODE 15: Experimental Design & Threats (Placebo, Bias).
Measurement
- NODE 12: Variables: Independent (IV) vs Dependent (DV), Control, Confounding.
- NODE 13: Operational Definitions: Abstract Concept → Measurable Indicator.
- NODE 25: Assessment, Standardization, and Norms.
Sampling & Data
- NODE 16: Population ≠ Sample. Random vs Stratified sampling. Sampling bias.
- NODE 17: Evidence hierarchy: Anecdote → Controlled Study → Replication.
- NODE 18: Basic Stats: Mean, Variance, Statistical Significance.
Quality Control
- NODE 19 & 20: Reliability (Consistency) vs Validity (Accuracy).
- NODE 21: Bias: Confirmation, Observer, Social Desirability.
- NODE 23: Replication crisis & Scientific self-correction. Science relies on the total body of evidence.
Ethics in Research
- NODE 24: Protection from harm and human dignity.
- Informed consent & Voluntary participation.
- Right to withdraw, Confidentiality, Debriefing.
- Scientific knowledge does not justify unethical treatment.
Critical Psychology
- NODE 22: Correlation ≠ Causation. (Could be A→B, B→A, C→A&B, or Coincidence).
- NODE 26 & 27: Common Sense vs Science. Evaluating pseudoscientific myths & unfalsifiable claims.
Person & Context
- NODE 28 & 29: Individual Differences. Nature, Nurture & Interaction.
- Genes + Brain + Environment + Culture = Experience.
- NODE 30 & 32: Culture, context, and applied psychology in everyday life.
The Observer
- NODE 31: The researcher is also a human being.
- Subjectivity, reflexivity, and observer effects.
- Central Question: Can the observer ever be completely separate from what is observed?
- NODE 34: The Limits of Psychology.
Core Distinctions
A broken scale might consistently tell you that you weigh 50kg every day (Reliable/Consistent), but if you actually weigh 70kg, the measurement is fundamentally false (Not Valid/Inaccurate).
Theory ≠ HypothesisA hypothesis is a specific, testable prediction for a single study. A theory is a massive, overarching framework that organizes and explains hundreds of verified findings.
Correlation ≠ CausationJust because ice cream sales and shark attacks rise at the same time (Correlation) does not mean ice cream causes shark attacks. Both are caused by a hidden third variable: Summer heat.
The Psychological Method
NODE 35: The structural flow of psychological thinking.
