The Social Contract

"Why should human beings accept political authority at all?"

The Philosophical Foundation of Obedience

If all human beings are born free and equal, by what right does any State claim authority over them? The Social Contract theory proposes that political legitimacy rests not on divine right or brute force, but on a hypothetical agreement among rational individuals to surrender absolute liberty in exchange for collective security.

We have secured the philosophical consent of the governed. The abstract agreement has been signed. But an agreement is not a government. We must now turn this theoretical contract into a physical, functioning engine of laws and institutions.
