Successor & Predecessor

The Mathematical Machine of "Next" and "Previous"

The Central Idea

A whole number is intimately related to the numbers immediately around it. The operation n → n+1 is especially fundamental because it builds the entire whole-number sequence step by step. This tiny mechanism eventually generates counting, algorithms, sequences, parity, and discrete mathematics.

The whole-number Universe can be generated by starting at zero and repeatedly applying "+1". The moment subtraction asks for a number below zero, the Universe reaches its boundary and must expand.
