Real-World Translation

Reading, Modelling, Calculating & Verifying

The Human Problem

Up to now, we have mostly been working inside mathematics: 2 + 5, 3 × 7. Now we turn the direction around. We start with the real world, express what is happening in mathematical language, solve it, and then return to the real situation to check whether the answer makes sense.

REALITY → MATHEMATICAL MODEL → CALCULATION → INTERPRETATION → VERIFICATION

The 33 Translation Cells

Bridging Reality and Mathematics

CELL 01

Translation Language

Seven plus three ↓ 7 + 3
  • Math as a language
  • Compressing sentences to symbols
  • Reasoning through structure
CELL 02

Reading Comprehension

Start:18
Action:Sell 5
Find:Remain?
  • Understand before calculating
  • Identify starting quantity
  • Identify action & unknown
CELL 03

Don't Hunt Keywords

"more" Depends on relationship
  • Words can mislead
  • Relationship > Vocabulary
  • Understand the situation
CELL 04

Identifying Operations

+Combine
−Remove/Diff
×Groups/Scale
÷Share/Split
  • Connecting action to symbol
  • Operation represents relationship
CELL 05

The Story Movie

12
→
+8
→
20
  • Problem as a sequence
  • Frames of change
  • Equation compresses story
CELL 06

Three Questions

What was there?
What happened?
What to find?
  • Starting quantity
  • Transformation
  • Unknown target
CELL 07-08

Modelling Reality

🍎🏫👦
8 × 30
  • Discarding irrelevant detail
  • Isolating numerical structure
  • Simplification is power
CELL 09

Choosing Quantity

Total Pencils? → 7 × 3
Pencils per Child? → 3
  • What is being counted?
  • Same story, different questions
  • Precision in objective
CELL 10-11

Units Carry Meaning

10 Apples
  • Number vs Context
  • "25 what?"
  • Calculation → Context
CELL 13-14

Add/Sub Meanings

+ : Combine, Accumulate - : Remove, Difference
  • Not just "more/take away"
  • Difference without removal
  • Conceptual relationships
CELL 15-16

Mul/Div Meanings

× : Groups, Scale, Area ÷ : Share, Measure fit
  • Multiplication as structure
  • "How many groups?" vs "How many in group?"
CELL 17

The Reverse Journey

x - 7 = 15 ↓ x = 15 + 7
  • Story → Equation → Inverse
  • Recovering starting quantities
  • Connecting to Cell 09
CELL 18-19

Verifying Logical Sense

10 + 3 = 13 (Left)
✗
Wrong Model!
  • Math correct ≠ Model correct
  • Does answer fit reality?
  • The reality check
CELL 20

Estimate First

≈ 600 (398+204)
  • Rough bound before calculating
  • Catch magnitude errors
  • Workflow: Est → Calc → Check
CELL 21

Units Catch Errors

5 apples + 3 km
= ERROR
  • Meaningless combinations
  • Syntax vs Semantics
  • Dimensional sanity check
CELL 22

Direction Check

2000 ↑ 2500
  • Should result be larger/smaller?
  • Quick logical filter
  • Catches wrong operations
CELL 23

Bounds Check

  • 8 × 10 ≈ 80
  • Not 8, Not 800
  • Appropriate range logic
CELL 24

The Translation Cycle

STORY ↓ MODEL ↓ ANSWER ↓ REALITY CHECK
  • The complete workflow
  • Synthesis of all steps
CELL 26

Ambiguity

"Ravi has 5 more." More than what?
  • Incomplete statements
  • Don't invent information
  • Recognize underspecification
CELL 32

The Dual Skills

MANIPULATION INTERPRETATION
  • Doing math vs Using math
  • Word problems test interpretation
  • Foundational modelling skill

Exit Portal

We have learned to translate reality into mathematics and back again. We know what numbers are, how they are structured, and how to use them. Now we must establish the final rules of the road: When multiple operations appear together, what is the universal law for evaluating them?
