Roman Numerals & The Separation of Quantity from Symbol

The Central Idea

After learning the decimal positional system, we must ask: Did every civilisation use place value? No. Roman numerals give us a completely different way of writing quantities. Studying them lets us separate two things that are easy to confuse: the abstract quantity itself, and the symbolic technology used to write it down.

QUANTITY → SYMBOL → FIXED VALUE → ADDITIVE COMBINATION → SUBTRACTIVE LOGIC → NON-POSITIONAL SYSTEM → NOTATION AS TECHNOLOGY

The 29 Representational Cells

Deconstructing Symbolic Languages

CELL 01

Quantity vs Symbol

10 X ten
  • 10 = X
  • Quantity remains unchanged
  • Representation changes
  • A number can have multiple names
CELL 02

The Three Symbols

I
1
V
5
X
10
  • I = 1, V = 5, X = 10
  • Fixed numerical values
  • Not digits in the decimal sense
CELL 03

Non-Positional Logic

DECIMAL (Positional)5 → 50
ROMAN (Fixed Value)V → V
  • Decimal: Position changes magnitude
  • Roman: 'V' always means 5
  • Symbols combine by rules, not place weights
CELL 04-06

Additive Logic

VI →
65 + 1
  • Combining symbols to build quantity
  • VI = 5 + 1 = 6
  • XII = 10 + 1 + 1 = 12
  • Symbols accumulate quantity (XXX = 30)
CELL 07-08

Subtractive Logic

IV →
45 - 1
  • Smaller numeral before larger
  • Indicates subtraction
  • IV = 5 - 1 = 4
  • IX = 10 - 1 = 9
CELL 09-10

Order Encodes Relationship

IV5 - 14
VI5 + 16
  • Almost identical symbols
  • Order changes the operation
  • Likewise: IX (9) vs XI (11)
  • Visual sequence encodes arithmetic
CELL 11-14

Notation as Technology

10 1(10)+0
  • Symbol ≠ Underlying Quantity
  • Roman system has combination rules
  • A number can have many symbolic languages
  • Crucial mathematical literacy skill
CELL 15-19

Representation vs Calculation

REPRESENTATIONXXI
CALCULATION ALGORITHM+10, +1, carry
  • Roman can record large quantities
  • Decimal places allow column arithmetic
  • Positional notation won for computational efficiency
  • Representation power ≠ Calculation convenience
CELL 20-27

Historical Context

MARKS → ROMAN → DECIMAL
  • Tallying and Additive systems
  • Roman numerals in history/clocks
  • Evolution toward positional base-10
  • Improving the technology of recording quantity
CELL 28-29

The Central Distinction

QUANTITY ≠ SYMBOL
  • The philosophical heart of the cell
  • What is a number? Not the symbol itself.
  • Notation is a human invention to hold the abstract idea.

Exit Portal

We now understand that a number exists independently of the symbols we use to write it. We have mastered the foundation: counting, order, zero, absolute value, operations, properties, and alternative notations. Now, it is time to take these abstract quantities and apply them to the real world.
