Streams of Freedom
Peasants, Workers, Dalits, Tribals & Competing Visions of Liberty
The Conceptual Chain
The struggle against colonial rule was never a single, unified river directed only by the Congress. It was a delta of fierce, independent streams. Peasants fought oppressive rents; industrial workers struck for wages; Dalits demanded social equality; tribals defended their forests; and radical leftists and the INA envisioned armed socialist liberation. 'Freedom' meant fundamentally different things to these different groups.
