The Light Temple
Drawing • Perspective • Form • Light • Shadow • Spatial Illusion
The Central Question
How can a flat surface convince the eye that space, form, depth, light and three-dimensional objects exist? The artist learns to convert 3D reality through observation and measurement into 2D marks, building the illusion of form through perspective and value.
The Illusion Matrix
Ontology of Representation
Drawing & Sketching
- Drawing is translation: world → visual info → marks.
- Sketching: quick, exploratory, preparatory.
- Captures information before final commitment.
Mark-Making
- Hatching, stippling, scumbling, blending.
- Line control: pressure, speed, tapering, variation.
Gesture & Contour
- Gesture: Action, energy, posture (30s - 2m).
- Contour: External and internal boundaries.
- Cross-contour: Lines wrapping around to show volume.
Construction & Solids
- Basic Mass → Axis → Major Planes → Detail.
- Cube, sphere, cylinder, cone, pyramid.
- The fundamental grammar of constructed drawing.
Axis & Ellipse
- Axis: Directional line through a form (bottles, limbs).
- Ellipse: A circle in perspective; varies in width based on angle.
Measurement & Envelope
- Comparative measurement, alignment, plumb lines.
- Envelope Method: Reducing object to a simple outer boundary.
- Bounding Box: Controlling height, width, and depth.
Horizon & Vanishing Point
- Horizon Line: Represents the viewer's eye level.
- Vanishing Point: Where parallel lines appear to converge.
1, 2, 3 Point Perspective
- 1-Point: Corridors, roads, frontal views.
- 2-Point: Corner views, buildings, furniture.
- 3-Point: High/low dramatic angles (skyscrapers).
Depth & Atmospheric
- Atmospheric: Decreasing contrast/saturation with distance.
- Depth: Overlap, occlusion, relative size, vertical placement.
Foreshortening & Objects
- Foreshortening: Apparent length compressed when pointing at viewer.
- Complex objects = combinations of simpler geometric forms (e.g., mug = cylinder + handle).
Figure & Animal
- Gesture → Line of Action → Major Masses (Head/Torso/Pelvis).
- Structure before detail.
Light & Value Modeling
- Highlight → Light → Midtone → Core Shadow → Reflected Light → Cast Shadow.
- Value modelling transforms a flat circle into a sphere.
Light Direction & Quality
- Top, side, front, backlight.
- Hard light: Sharp shadows. Soft light: Broad transitions.
Material Rendering
- Matte vs Metal (high contrast/reflections) vs Glass (transparency/distortion).
- Tonal Edges: Hard, soft, lost. Use selectively to control attention.
Space & Architecture
- Architecture: Bridge to Realm 22.
- Interior: Using floor/ceiling planes and VP.
- Landscape: Foreground → Midground → Background → Horizon → Sky.
Memory & Process
- Memory Drawing: Observe, hide, reconstruct, compare.
- OBSERVE → FRAME → MEASURE → BLOCK → CONSTRUCT → LIGHT → SHADOW → REFINE
School Foundation & Labs
- C6-8: Basic light/shade, simple form, perspective awareness.
- C9-10: Systematic drawing, depth, creative expression.
- Labs: Perspective, Form, Shadow, Material.
Realm 04 Doctrine
THE SURFACE IS FLAT.
THE WORLD IS NOT.
DRAWING BUILDS THE BRIDGE.
PERSPECTIVE BUILDS DEPTH.
CONSTRUCTION BUILDS FORM.
VALUE BUILDS VOLUME.
LIGHT REVEALS.
SHADOW DEFINES.
EDGES GUIDE.
MEASUREMENT CORRECTS.
AND OBSERVATION KEEPS THE IMAGE HONEST.
Knowledge Progression
Realm 02 = learn the ELEMENTS.
Realm 03 = learn to ARRANGE THEM.
Realm 04 = CONSTRUCT FORM & LIGHT.
