The General Duty Gate
SSC GD / THE FIRST UNIFORMED DOOR INTO CENTRAL SECURITY
Before there is command, there is duty.
SSC GD is one of India's major entry routes into frontline uniformed service at the Constable (General Duty) level.
THE EXAM IS COMMON. THE FORCE IS NOT.
THE EXAM IS COMMON. THE FORCE IS NOT.
What is SSC GD?
THE RECRUITMENT GATEWAY
SSC GD is not one "police force."
It is a recruitment gateway into several Central security organisations. The official 2026 notice explicitly names CAPFs, SSF, Assam Rifles and NCB's Sepoy post.
What does GD stand for?
General Duty.
Who conducts it?
The Staff Selection Commission (SSC).
What is the qualification?
Matriculation (10th Class) from a recognized Board/University.
What is the age limit?
Generally 18-23 years (crucial date & relaxations strictly as per current notification).
Is it a permanent career?
Yes. It is a permanent Central Government role.
Constable vs SI?
GD Constable is the primary frontline tier. Sub-Inspector (via SSC CPO) is a supervisory/investigative rank.
The Great Duty Constellation
THE EIGHT WORLDS WITHIN THE GATE
BSF
THE BORDER
Border Security Force. Primary border guarding and frontline operations in varied, often harsh, frontier environments.
CISF
THE SHIELD AROUND INFRASTRUCTURE
Central Industrial Security Force. Protection of specified industrial, infrastructure (airports, metros), and strategic establishments.
CRPF
THE INTERNAL SECURITY FORCE
Central Reserve Police Force. Large-scale internal-security, anti-insurgency, and rapid operational deployments across the country.
SSB
THE FRONTIER COMMUNITIES
Sashastra Seema Bal. Border-area responsibilities (Indo-Nepal/Bhutan) and associated internal security duties.
ITBP
THE HIGH MOUNTAINS
Indo-Tibetan Border Police. Specialized high-altitude and Himalayan operational environments.
AR
THE NORTHEAST (RIFLEMAN)
Assam Rifles. Rifleman (GD) route into the oldest paramilitary force, operating within its distinctive Northeastern environment.
SSF
THE CEREMONIAL / STRATEGIC LAYER
Secretariat Security Force. A specialised Central Government security environment, primarily Delhi-based.
NCB
THE NARCOTICS ENFORCEMENT DOOR (SEPOY)
Narcotics Control Bureau. Recruits for the post of Sepoy, an operational and enforcement role distinct from standard CAPF duties.
Constable is not "just a job title"
A Constable can be part of:
BUT: Actual duties vary enormously by force, unit, location and assignment. A CISF constable's daily environment can be completely different from an ITBP or CRPF constable's.

The Geography of Recruitment
Unlike many exams, SSC GD recruitment is deeply tied to geography. SSF vacancies are filled on an All-India basis, while vacancies in the other CAPFs are filled according to vacancies available in various States/UTs.
Why State/UT-wise vacancies?
What is a Border Guarding District?
What is a Militancy/Naxal affected district?
Does my home state matter?
What is an All-India vacancy?
Can I be posted elsewhere later?

The Wrong General Duty
"GD means only border duty."
No. Infrastructure, internal security, and ceremonial duties exist.
"Every constable has the same life."
No. Force and unit assignment dictate reality.
"The written exam alone decides selection."
No. Physical and medical gates are absolute.
"More marks automatically mean the force I want."
No. Vacancies and state/category distribution restrict it.
"Home-state vacancy means home-state posting forever."
No. Postings are service-dependent.
"CISF, BSF, CRPF and ITBP are identical."
No. Fundamentally different operational mandates.
"Constable means unimportant."
No. Every organisation begins somewhere. Operational systems depend on the people who execute their daily duties.
