The Law Gate

CLAT PG · LL.M. / THE GATE TO LEGAL SPECIALISATION
The LL.B. teaches you to enter the law.
The LL.M. teaches you to enter a legal specialism. An advanced academic qualification, not a universal mandatory step for becoming a lawyer in India.
What happens after LL.B.?

CLAT PG
THE NATIONAL LAW GATE
The Common Law Admission Test for postgraduate admission at participating National Law Universities. It is an examination, not a single university. Detailed intake, reservation, and programmes are provided through individual NLU brochures.
UNIVERSITY LL.M.
THE INSTITUTIONAL LAW GATE
Not every LL.M. door is CLAT. Many institutions have their own entrance examination, university-specific application, merit selection, interview components, or special category routes.
CLAT PG ≠ All LL.M. Admissions
ALWAYS CHECK THE UNIVERSITY + PROGRAMME + ACADEMIC YEAR
CLAT-PG Participating NLUs The common examination ecosystem for the major National Law Universities.
University-Specific LL.M. Institution-controlled admission (e.g., Delhi University LL.M., private university tests).
Other Specialised Routes Programme or institution-specific mechanisms, sometimes including interviews or research proposals.
* The Consortium explicitly advises candidates to examine individual NLU brochures for specific programme details.

The Eligibility Vault
Who can apply for CLAT PG?

Is a 5-year integrated LL.B. accepted?
Can final-year LL.B. students apply?
Is there an upper age limit?
What minimum marks are required?
CLAT EXAMINATION ELIGIBILITY IS ONE LAYER. NLU PROGRAMME ELIGIBILITY IS ANOTHER.

The general CLAT PG requirement specifies an LL.B. or equivalent (e.g., 50% for Gen/OBC/EWS, 45% for SC/ST), with no upper age limit, allowing final-year students subject to proof at admission. However, individual NLU programmes may have specific rules.

How does CLAT PG ask law?

CLAT PG is not simply an LL.B. memory test. It assesses reading comprehension, legal reasoning, and the ability to apply principles.

Passage-Based Format
Questions are often derived from extracts of primary legal materials, important court decisions, statutes, or regulations.
Statutory Interpretation
Testing the ability to read and comprehend complex legal texts and apply rules to factual scenarios.
Contemporary Issues
Awareness of recent legal developments, constitutional reasoning, and current public law debates.

CLAT RANK IS A POSITION, NOT A DEGREE.
Rank determines your competitive position.
NLU eligibility determines whether you can be considered.
Seat availability determines what can be offered.
Category and domicile rules can alter the competition.
The NLU's admission rules determine the final conditions.
Do I even need an LL.M.?
Is it necessary to practice law? To become a judge? For corporate law?

An LL.M. is a postgraduate specialization and research degree; it is not simply an upgraded license to practise law. Career outcomes depend heavily on the institution, specialization, and your professional trajectory, not just the letters "LL.M."
